Making the Most of Your Garden Borders
Date: Friday 20th March 2026
Time: 1pm – 4pm
A beautiful border can completely transform a garden — but knowing where to start (or how to improve what’s already there) can feel overwhelming.
In this practical and inspiring workshop, we’ll explore how to design and make the most of your garden borders, whether they’re sunny, shady, wide, narrow, newly planted or long-established.
Together, we’ll look at different planting styles — from structured and architectural to soft and naturalistic — helping you choose the right approach for your space and personal taste. We’ll also focus on selecting plants that provide year-round colour and interest, so your garden continues to offer something in every season.
During the session you’ll:
-
Explore planting styles and how to apply them to your own garden
-
Learn how to assess light, soil and aspect
-
Understand how to layer planting for depth and impact
-
Discover reliable plants for structure, texture and seasonal interest
-
Begin shaping a simple plan for your own border
The workshop is led by Maxine Eaton, a professional gardener and accomplished plantswoman with years of hands-on experience designing and maintaining beautiful, resilient gardens. Maxine brings a wealth of practical knowledge along with a thoughtful, down-to-earth teaching style — helping you feel confident in your plant choices and design decisions.
Please bring along measurements (and photos if helpful) of your sunny or shady border so you can start applying the ideas directly to your own space.
As always at HUT on the Green, this will be a relaxed, supportive session with time for discussion, questions and shared ideas — tea and coffee included.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to refine an existing border, this workshop will give you the clarity and confidence to move forward with purpose.
