Introduction to Dressmaking [evening]

Learn the foundations of dressmaking in this 6-week course, perfect for absolute beginners or anyone who wants to build confidence at the sewing machine. You’ll be guided through the whole process step by step, from learning how to use a sewing machine to understanding commercial patterns and constructing simple garments.

Led by Sarah Johnston — an experienced textiles teacher, freelance textile artist, former fabric-shop owner, and daily wearer of her own handmade clothes — this course offers friendly, practical teaching for complete beginners. Sarah brings a real love of sewing and a warm approach that helps you feel at ease right from the start.

Over the 6 weeks, you will learn:

• How to use a sewing machine safely and confidently

• How to read and work from a commercial sewing pattern

• How to construct two simple garments: woven pyjama bottoms and a jersey T-shirt

What do you need to bring?

We have sewing machines [although if you have your own then feel free to bring it with you - it best to learn on your own machine] you will need to buy the patterns and fabric of your choice for your garments [estimated price £30-£40 [depending on fabric]. The first session will focus on how to buy patterns and fabric and where to buy them from. This course is full and focused, so we ask that participants commit to all 6 sessions.
