Free Motion Embriodery
Date: Sunday 7th June
Time: 10am–4pm
Spend a day exploring the creative possibilities of free motion embroidery using a sewing machine in the relaxed and welcoming setting of HUT on the Green. This hands-on workshop is a gentle introduction to drawing with stitch — combining mark making, texture, colour and observation to create expressive embroidered surfaces inspired by natural forms.
Throughout the day you’ll experiment with a range of free motion embroidery techniques, learning how to move fabric freely beneath the needle to build line, pattern and texture. Using leaves, plants and other natural materials as inspiration, we’ll explore drawing, observation and colour in a loose and approachable way — no drawing experience needed.
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with a little sewing machine experience who would like to try something new and more creative with their machine. There will be plenty of guidance and demonstrations throughout the day, helping you build confidence as you develop your own stitched piece.
Led by Sarah Johnston — an experienced textiles teacher, freelance textile artist, former fabric-shop owner, and daily wearer of her own handmade clothes — the workshop offers friendly, practical teaching in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Sarah brings a real love of textiles and making, along with a warm and supportive approach that helps people feel at ease right from the start.
By the end of the session, you’ll have created a unique embroidered work that can either stand alone or be developed further at home by hand or machine if you wish.
All materials are provided, so you don’t need to bring anything with you — just come along ready to experiment, stitch and enjoy a creative day at the HUT. If you have yoyr own sewing machine - it would be advisable to bring your own to learn on.
