Ceramics - Coil pots

£45.00

Date: Wednesday 17th June
Time: 10am–12pm

Join us for anintroduction to coil pottery and hand-building with clay.

This workshop is open to all levels of experience — whether you’ve never worked with clay before or already enjoy making ceramics by hand. You'll take things step by step, learning the basics of coil building while creating your own unique handmade plant pot to take home.

We’ll begin by getting to know the clay: how it feels, moves, and responds in your hands. From there, Faye will guide you through the process of rolling coils and slowly building up the walls of your pot using one of the oldest and most intuitive pottery techniques.

Working on wooden bats for support, you’ll shape your piece gradually and at your own pace, smoothing and joining the coils as you go. There’s plenty of room for creativity and play within the process — your pot might end up round and soft, tall and sculptural, or completely unexpected.

Alongside your pot, you’ll also create a small plate for it to sit on, giving your finished piece the practicality of water drainage.

You pieces will then be taken away and fired + you can collect from the HUT 2-3 weeks later

Hand-building with clay is wonderfully freeing. It allows for expressive, characterful forms that don’t need to be perfect to feel beautiful. This workshop is very much about enjoying the process of making, slowing down for a couple of hours, and discovering what your hands can create.

The session is led by ceramic artist and experienced workshop tutor Faye Magkanari, who has been working with coil pots and hand-building techniques for many years. Faye brings a calm, encouraging approach to teaching and loves seeing the different directions people take with their work — no two pots are ever the same.

Teas and coffees will be provided, and we’ll create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere where you can relax, make, and spend a lovely few hours working with clay.

You’ll leave with new skills, a finished handmade pot, and hopefully the feeling of having had a really enjoyable morning making something with your hands.

Suitable for beginners and all materials provided.
