Woodwork Foundations
A Six-Week Introduction to Woodworking with Nick James
Date: 5th September - 10th October 2026
Saturdays, 10:00am–12:00pm
Have you ever wanted to learn woodworking but weren’t sure where to start?
Woodworking Foundations is a relaxed and practical six-week course designed to introduce you to the timeless skills of working with wood. Led by furniture maker Nick James, you’ll learn the core principles that underpin fine craftsmanship while building confidence using traditional hand tools in a friendly, small-group environment.
Over six Saturday mornings you’ll explore:
- Understanding timber, grain direction and material selection
- Essential hand tools and how to use them safely and accurately
- Sharpening chisels and plane irons
- Measuring, marking out and working to fine tolerances
- Traditional woodworking joints and when to use them
- Planning, assembling and finishing your work
Throughout the course you’ll create your own traditional wooden tool tote, giving you the opportunity to put each new skill into practice while making something both beautiful and useful to take home.
Whether you’re completely new to woodworking or looking to build a stronger foundation of hand tool skills, this course will give you the knowledge and confidence to continue your woodworking journey.
All materials are included. If you already have your own hand tools, you’re very welcome to bring them along, although a full selection of workshop tools will also be available to use.
As always at HUT on the Green, there’ll be plentiful tea, coffee and biscuits to keep you going.
Places are strictly limited to ensure plenty of individual tuition, so early booking is recommended.
