Introduction to Oil Paints
Date: 5th January - 9th February 2026
Schedule: Every Monday for 5 weeks with a week off on 12th January
Time: 3–5pm
Have you ever wanted to try oil painting but felt unsure where to begin? This 5-week course is the perfect introduction.
Oil paints have been used to create some of the greatest masterpieces in history – and for good reason. They’re versatile, long-lasting, and capture every brushstroke, from the finest detail to bold, textured marks. Their slow drying time means you can work at a relaxed pace, blending colours and making seamless changes as your painting develops.
In this friendly, hands-on course you’ll explore:
-
The essential materials and surfaces used by oil painters
-
Techniques with brushes, cloths, and palette knives
-
How to create your very first oil paintings with confidence
We’ll be working with water-soluble oils, which give you all the benefits of traditional oils but without the need for harsh solvents like turpentine. That means no overpowering smells – just more time to enjoy painting.
Your tutor, Jason Skill, is an experienced artist and teacher who has been helping students unlock their creativity for over 30 years. Known for his patient, encouraging style and wealth of knowledge, Jason makes learning enjoyable and accessible for complete beginners and those with a little experience alike.
By the end of the course, you’ll not only understand the medium but also have your own oil paintings to take home.
