Young persons sewing course

A fun and practical six-week sewing course designed for young people aged 10–16. Perfect for complete beginners, the course will introduce young makers to the sewing machine and help them develop the skills and confidence to create their own projects.

Working step by step, participants will learn how to operate a sewing machine safely, follow a sewing pattern and turn fabric into something they can use and wear. During the course, each child will make a small bag and a simple garment to take home.

The course is led by Sarah Johnston, an experienced textiles teacher, freelance textile artist and former fabric-shop owner. Sarah brings a wealth of practical experience, a genuine love of sewing and a warm teaching style that helps young learners feel comfortable, capable and creative.

Over the six weeks, participants will learn:

• How to use a sewing machine safely and confidently

• Essential sewing tools and techniques

• How to thread a machine and sew simple seams

• How to understand and work from a sewing pattern

• How to measure, pin and cut fabric accurately

• How to make a small bag

• How to construct a simple garment

What do you need to bring?

Sewing machines are available, although participants are welcome to bring their own—it can be helpful to learn on the machine they will use at home.

Participants will need to bring fabric for their projects. This is expected to cost approximately £10–£20, depending on the fabric chosen. Full-size printed patterns will be provided.

This is a busy, hands-on course that builds skills from week to week, so we ask that participants commit to attending all six sessions.
