Intermediate Dressmaking - Jacket

Make a short, quilted, button-up jacket in this structured six-week course for improving beginners. Quilted jackets are a practical heritage garment, designed to be hard-wearing, comfortable, and long-lasting.

Across the course, you’ll quilt your own fabric and construct a simple jacket, working step by step at a steady pace. The focus is on whole-cloth quilting rather than patchwork (unless your fabric already includes it), keeping the process clear and achievable.

The course is led by Sarah Johnston, a seamstress with over 50 years’ experience. Teaching is calm, practical, and supportive, with clear demonstrations and individual guidance throughout.

This course is suitable for those who are already comfortable using a sewing machine and reading a simple pattern and want to build confidence in garment construction.

Participants should bring their own sewing machine where possible, a basic sewing kit, one of the recommended patterns (Matchy Matchy Homebody Jacket or Oh Me Oh My Sage Jacket), and sufficient cotton fabric for the outer and lining, 100% cotton batting, and cotton fabric for bias binding.

By the end of the six weeks, you’ll have a finished quilted jacket and a solid understanding of the techniques used to make it.
