It’s National Tree Week – the UK’s biggest celebration of trees – and here at HUT on the Green, we’re marking it in true HUT style: with creativity, curiosity and a big nod of appreciation to the trees that surround and inspire us.
Trees are at the heart of so much of what happens here – from the materials our makers work with, to the view from our windows in Gosforth Central Park. This week, we’re slowing down to notice them, sketch them, print them and celebrate them through a whole range of creative workshops and gatherings.
Our Lino Printing Workshop: Celebrating Trees invites people to explore the beautiful forms and textures of trees through printmaking, carving and inky experimentation. The Drawing from Trees class with Charlotte Johnston takes things outdoors, encouraging people to look closely at shape, line and texture while sketching directly from life. Meanwhile, our Tricks for Trees watercolour course dives into the colours and light that make trees so captivating on paper, and our friendly Tree Party rounds off the week with conversation, sharing and celebration – a relaxed get-together for anyone who simply loves trees.
And it doesn’t stop there. Every class running at the Hut this week will take inspiration from trees in some way – whether it’s life drawing models posing with branches, ceramics students exploring the patterns and textures of bark, or our Woodpeckers children’s woodworking club, where young makers will be working with real wood straight from local trees.
So whether you’re an artist, maker, gardener or someone who just enjoys a good walk among the trees, there’s something here for you. Join us as we celebrate the quiet giants that inspire and sustain so much of what we do.
